I’m originally from New Jersey, but now reside in Florida. I have been natural for the past 4 years. I decided to go natural because I was so tired of worrying about whether or not my scalp will scab after getting a relaxer.
My scalp became so sensitive after a while that even the thought of running a comb through it frightened me.

When I made the decision to go natural I knew nothing about the natural hair community on YouTube, so I blindly made the decision. I had only had a relaxer for about 3 years, seeing as I got my first relaxer in my junior year of high school. So I wasn’t sure what I would do to my hair when it was fully natural. As I started to fish around, I found YouTube guru’s that had similar hair textures to mine and I began to take tips from them. Once I started to play around with different styles and products, I realized that what worked for one person wasn’t going to work for my hair. This turned me into a product junkie (I’m doing much better now :)). I began to buy product after product just to see what works for me and what doesn’t. Once I got a handle on that the rest was easy; I began coming up with my own hair routine and styles.

People who looked at me sideways for going natural in the beginning began contacting me for transitioning advice. I became an inspiration to others, which I love! I’ve helped so many other women go through the process and have helped them love and embrace their natural hair. I would have to say that going natural has opened my eyes on how I see myself. Although I was natural long before I got my relaxer in high school, I did not know how to take care of my hair then. I did not appreciate the beauty in wearing my hair natural. Again, I’m glad I made that decision and I hope I can continue to be an inspiration to others.

I began my transition from relaxed to natural hair today. I am challenging myself not to get a relaxer touch up or use a color on my hair for six months. My last relaxer touch up was on 6/13/08. Thank you to all those who have shared their hair journeys, how-to’s & product reviews.
